Shanghai ‘Tree Mountain’ to Feature 400 Terraces, 1,000 Structural Columns
The proposed tree mountain site
HEATHERWICK Studio has unveiled this tree-covered development for a 15 acre site near Shanghai’s art district
The 300,000m2 mixed-use scheme has been designed to resemble ‘tree-covered mountains’ and features 400 terraces.
The trees are supported by 1000 structural columns covering the façade. According to the practice, the design was ‘conceived not as a building but as a piece of topography’.
Next to a public park, the existing 15 acre site incorporated several historic buildings and the land was split into two plots, separated by a narrow stretch of government land.
The development has been under construction since 2014 and is set to complete in 2018.
The M50 project is being showcased as part of an exhibition called ’Provocations: the Architecture and Design of Heatherwick Studio’ which runs until January 3 2016 at the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, reports Architects newspaper.
