Nigeria is one of the most economically developed nations on the continent and has a very high population to cater for. Generally here, the concentration of highrise buildings are localized around the capital city, Abuja and the commercial capital, Lagos amidst other large cities in the country which have experienced rapid growth.

We made a list of the tallest buildings in the country, of which the Nigerian External Communications (NECOM) building is the tallest standing at 520ft with 32 floors.

1. The Nigerian External Communications House (NECOM House)

The NECOM House is located in Marina, Lagos and is the tallest in the whole of West Africa with 32 floors and standing at 520ft (160m). The building formerly known as the
NITEL tower is a skyscraper completed in 1979. Made of concrete, the communications spire at the top of the tower serves as a lighthouse beacon for Lagos Harbour.

2. Union Bank Building

Closely behind is the Union Bank Building with 407ft (124m). It is also located in Marina, Lagos and serves as the headquarters of the Union Bank of Nigeria. It has 28 floors in the building.

3. WTC Tower 2

The World Trade Centre Tower 2 is being self-touted as “Abuja’s only Grade A office space”. It is a 25-floor commercial building, standing at 394ft (120m). It topped out in 2015 to become the tallest building in Abuja.

4. WTC Tower 1

The World Trade Centre Tower 1 is a 24-floor apartment building standing at 361ft (110m). The tower has about 120 apartments, which range in size from 1 to 6 bedrooms. The World Trade Centre generally is eventually to have six towers, a mall and a hotel.

5. Ministry of Communication Building

The Ministry of Communications Building is a 30 story high rise building in Lagos. The building is about 358ft tall (109m)

6. Cocoa House

Cocoa House, completed in 1965 at a height of 344ft (105m) is located in the city of Ibadan in Oyo state. It was built from proceeds from commodities (e.g. cocoa, timber, rubber) and was formerly known as “Ile Awon Agbe” which translates as “House of Farmers”. The building has 26 floors.

7. Intercontinental Lagos

Kofo Abayomi Street on Victoria Island houses this 344ft (105m) masterpiece of a hotel. The luxurious hotel has 22 floors and was built in 2013.

8. Independence House

The Independence House alternatively known as the Ministry of Defence building is located in Lagos island. It has 23 floors and was built in 1960. The building is the first high-rise building in Nigeria and is 338ft (103m) tall.

9. CBN Lagos

The Central Bank of Nigeria building in Lagos was built in 2013 and has about 19 floors. It is about 330ft (100m) tall and is located in the heart of Lagos Central Business district.

10. Great Nigeria House

The Great Nigeria House has 22 floors and is located on Martins Street in Lagos Island. Currently, the building houses the Mainstreet Bank of Nigeria and a few warehouses. It is about 312ft (95m) tall.
