Lagos Allocates Rent-to-Own Houses

Prince Gbolahan Lawal

Determined to reduce housing shortages, Lagos authorities have begun the implementation of its Rent-To-Own policy, aimed at making housing more readily affordable and accessible to the citizenry.

Under the scheme, about 100 allottees would be given keys to their apartment monthly. Though, there are 12 housing estates in the custody of the state government, only five estates are ready for allocation with 4, 355 apartments meant for Rent-To-Own.

The State’s Commissioner for Housing, Gbolahan Lawal said every responsible government must give utmost attention to providing housing for the low and middle-income earners.

Speaking at the presentation of keys to the first 100 allottees of the Rent-To-Own policy of the state, Lawal said that the need to create a new face of accommodation for Lagosians especially the low and middle income earners has become imperative in view of the ever increasing population of the state.

According to him, those who could not afford the five per cent down payment for the policy can apply for the rental policy, which requires just a month down payment.

The allottees who were presented with keys to their apartments, commended the state government for the gesture noting that it was a good one with a transparent process.

One of the beneficiaries, Bamidele Olayiwola Idowu said that he got the information through his father. Though he was initially scared that it might require a long and tedious process with bottlenecks, but it was not.
